When mistakes become opportunities

When a student was caught graffitiing school property, my department decided to look past the "mistake" to find the human need underneath. Recognizing that the vandalism was actually a misguided shout for creative freedom, we designed a restorative path that turned a disciplinary moment into a real project. We had the student take accountability by cleaning up the site, but then we gave him a legitimate outlet: designing and painting a mural of the school mascot. By building a system that addressed his specific needs rather than just issuing a punishment, we didn't just stop the vandalism—we helped a student find a sense of pride and a seat at the table.
