Collaborative leadership changes the way teams work together by involving staff in leadership decisions. This approach not only strengthens the team but also offers leaders valuable insights into decision making that highlight each person's strengths. When leaders invite their team members to participate in shaping the direction of projects and strategies, they build trust, improve communication, and create a more dynamic work environment. This post explores how collaborative leadership unlocks team potential and offers practical ways to include staff in decision making.

What Collaborative Leadership Means

At the Center for Learning and Growth, we prioritize consensus making as a part of our greater decision making process. During team meetings, we address challenges with a problem solving mindset and all contribute to developing a solution. If there are any ideas someone can't live with, we adjust to make sure it is a plan we can all agree to. If it is a plan we can all agree on, we write down the protocol and commit to trying it.

This leadership style contrasts with traditional top-down management, where decisions flow from the leader to the team without much feedback. Collaborative leadership creates a culture where people feel heard and respected, which motivates them to contribute their best work.

These meetings don't have to take long either. For example, after a conflict between two students, I gathered the staff involved and we discussed what to do next. What happened? What needs to happen to fix this? What will it look like? And after ten minutes, we were able to agree on a reentry plan and repair protocol for the students involved.

As their leader, I support making sure our plan goes into motion and everyone contributes where appropriate. When staff can see the plan took their opinions into action, there is more buy-in and ownership to our working community.

Why Including Staff in Decisions Strengthens Teams

When staff participate in leadership decisions, several positive effects emerge:

  • Builds trust: People trust leaders who listen and consider their opinions.

  • Increases engagement: Team members feel more connected to the work and motivated to succeed.

  • Encourages creativity: Different viewpoints spark new ideas and solutions.

  • Improves problem-solving: Collective thinking uncovers challenges and opportunities faster.

  • Develops skills: Staff gain experience in decision making and leadership.

The Role of Leaders in Fostering Collaboration

Leaders play a crucial role in creating an environment where collaboration thrives. They must:

  • Model openness: Share their own ideas and admit when they don’t have all the answers.

  • Encourage participation: Invite quieter team members to speak up.

  • Provide support: Offer resources and training to build decision-making skills.

  • Recognize contributions: Celebrate successes that come from team input.

By doing so, leaders build a culture where collaboration becomes natural and sustainable.

Challenge:

Next time you have a problem at work, bring people together and solve it with a plan everyone contributes and agrees to. Sharing decision making doesn't make you weak, it shows you trust your team and empowers them to contribute to the wider community.
